TIP presents Into the Woods
Tokyo International Players (TIP) is proud to present its spring musical production of Into the Woods, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by James Lapine; directed by Jon Reimer, with vocal direction by Clarissa White and music direction by Mika Ohta.
When a baker and his wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by a witch next door, they embark on a quest for special objects required to break the spell. Along the way, they swindle, lie, and steal from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk), and other characters from Grimms’ fairy tales in order to get their wish. Ultimately, wishes are granted for everyone, but the consequences of the actions the characters took to get their wishes return to haunt them later, with disastrous results.
This lively and irreverent fantasy, set in an Indian dreamscape, is a moving lesson about morality, responsibility, and the stories we tell our children. “I love traditional fairy tales with an innovative twist,” says Jon Reimer, director of the show. “The twist with Into the Woods is that all the Grimms’ fairy tales are combined into one story, to tell us a different moral than we expect.”
It was Reimer’s idea to set the story in India and add a Bollywood flavor. “TIP has a unique place in the theatre world. We’re in Asia doing Western theatre – what an opportunity! I’ve given all the shows I’ve directed for TIP elements of Asian theatre.” Reimer previously directed TIP’s productions of Pippin (2010), Once Upon a Mattress (2011), and the world premiere of A Kabuki Christmas Carol (2012). “For this musical, Indian theatre and Bollywood movies add an exotic beauty and useful performance techniques,” he explains.
The cast features a talented team of TIP veterans that includes Brian Berdanier, Sonia Bruinooge, E, Ken Endo, Lee Gemmell, Peter Griffith, Lee Hericks, Cynthia Hoof, Marie Kuroda, Sarah MacDonald, Jack Merluzzi, Juna Misakino, Kanon Misakino, Laura Moran, Amber Richardson, Alice Roschuni, Frances Somerville, Asuka Sorimachi, Rika Wakasugi, Hannah Weakley, Ra’Chelni M. “Ra” Weir II, and Michelle Yamazaki. Founded in 1896, TIP is a theatrical organization comprised primarily of the Tokyo foreign community, which provides quality English-language entertainment for international audiences.
“I think we’ve created something incredibly special,” says TIP President Frances Somerville. “The gorgeous Indian costumes, the lush set, the beautiful voices of the cast… people are not going to want to miss this magical production!”
